Food Technologist

A Food Technologist is responsible for developing new and improving existing food products, ensuring they are safe, nutritious, and appealing for consumers. This role establishes and maintains standards for the production, packaging, and marketing of food. Food Technologists work across a variety of sectors. 

Your role may include duties as follows: 

  •  Assessing flavour, colour, taste, texture, and nutritional content of food products. 
  • Developing and implementing quality control procedures to meet safety standards. 
  • Ensuring that products and processes comply with relevant food safety and regulatory standards (such as FSANZ). 
  • Optimising manufacturing and packaging processes to improve efficiency and product quality. 
  • Working with cross-functional teams in production, marketing, sensory evaluation, and regulatory affairs to launch products to market. 

Vocational Education Training Options

There are a number of options to qualify for this role: 

  • FBP40421 Certificate IV in Food Science and Technology: Prepares individuals for technical and supervisory roles including product development, quality assurance, and food safety auditing. Entry requires workplace learning in the food industry. 
  • FBP50121 Diploma of Food Science and Technology: Delivers advanced technical skills in food science, process innovation, and quality management. 

Salary Expectations  

Average salary is $73,600

This wage reflects VET qualification with typical experience in the field and excludes apprentice rates.
